Tutorial 7: Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology

"Assistive technology is any item, piece of equipment or product system whether acquired commercially off the self, modified, or customized that is used to increase or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities"(Public Law,1976 , as cited in Cook & Hussey, 1995).

Assistive technologies are primarily used to help an individual with a disability to function successfully.

An assisstive devise I found interesting was a talking photo frame. These are quite expensive however could be really helpful to someone who has suffered a TBI and has trouble sequencing tasks. What it is, is a simple photo album but with a recording devise on each page. So for example, a person with sequencing difficulties and wants to prepare a meal could take a photo of each step and place it in the album and record a message describing what happens in each step. An album like this would also help people in word recognition, and could be used to record your stories, timetables or messages. There are 24 pages in each album and cost between $98 and $122.
