Tutorial 7: Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology

"Assistive technology is any item, piece of equipment or product system whether acquired commercially off the self, modified, or customized that is used to increase or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities"(Public Law,1976 , as cited in Cook & Hussey, 1995).

Assistive technologies are primarily used to help an individual with a disability to function successfully.

An assisstive devise I found interesting was a talking photo frame. These are quite expensive however could be really helpful to someone who has suffered a TBI and has trouble sequencing tasks. What it is, is a simple photo album but with a recording devise on each page. So for example, a person with sequencing difficulties and wants to prepare a meal could take a photo of each step and place it in the album and record a message describing what happens in each step. An album like this would also help people in word recognition, and could be used to record your stories, timetables or messages. There are 24 pages in each album and cost between $98 and $122.

Online communities

What is the focus of this community?
Facebook's mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.

What services are provided?
Free online account
Social networking - communicating, instant messaging, email, blogging
Quizzes
Gaming
Mobile
Events calender - birthday, party reminders
Competitions
Advertising
Stores photos, videos, contacts
Share links and videos from youtube or from your personal collection, etc

How interactive is this site?
Facebook is one of the most interactive sites known. Apart from the obvious (stated above) Facebook offers interactive games, one being Farmville where you can invite friends to join your game where they can help produce a cyber farm.

How can people contribute?

Firstly by signing up to the huge online community it provides, where you can then send invitations to other friends asking them to join. You slowly build your community while you continuously add old and new friends, family and even work colleagues or people you don't know!
You can share your life over FB (Facebook) by uploading photos, videos from youtube or from home, sharing personal information. Photos that are uploaded, you can "tag" the people in them which will add the photo to their profile. People can comment on photos, on your comments shared on your profile or someone elses
- It's never ending!

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on why people choose to contribute to this community. What is it they are seeking?
Some people simply use FB for social interaction, to keep in contact with friends living away from home or close by. However a lot of people gain a sense of belonging and identity where they can share their thoughts, feelings and general life with people all over the world. People create fan pages of all sorts. e.g. the one have joined recently is the cheese roll appreciation club - being a fan page for people of Southland where cheese rolls are a favourite winter food. By joining these kinds of groups give people a sense of identity and belonging with other people with the same likes and dislikes as them.

Cut and paste an example of the type of topics being discussed (you may have to provide a context to your excerpt).

Here is a discussion on Moral Justifications:

Considering material presented during the course and make comment on the potential ethical issues that may arise in this community e.g. lack of identity and accountability.

Internet communities are not always safe. There are privacy issues with most things accessible over the internet. As facebook is used via the internet people from all over the world can access your personal information and photos. This can lead to identity theft or the creation of a false identity in hope of creating friendships with vulnerable people. Facebook also offers the opportunity for people to create pages that can promote anything from porn to discriminatory offense against religion and more.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on the benefits this community holds over traditional notions of community e.g. communities reliant on geographic proximity.
Facebook provides instant free communication to friends and family all over the world. From the instant chat to email and wall postings and sharing photos.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment what this community lacks or can not provide which traditional communities can.
One thing people believe Facebook lacks is that it can't provide that personal social interaction you get from direct contact communication. People will argue that relying on Facebook for social interaction is not healthy however I beg to differ. For example those who cannot get out and about like everybody else due to an intellectual or physical disability of a kind find happiness in communicating with people over Facebook, which is not exactly unhealthy for them if they enjoy this rather than direct contact. However we may say it would be unhealthy for a mentally and physically well individual to.

Wii Gaming

For those who don't know what a Wii is... You are truely missing out! Check their site out http://wii.com
Wii, as they say, is a new movement in home entertainment gaming, offering motion controlled gaming for people of all ages and is especially fun for family game nights!
As fun as they are, Wii also is used in rehabilitation (wiihabilitation) as a motivational tool to improve sequencing, reaction times, hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, memory, muscle strength, balance, numeracal skills and more!

1. Why do you think Wii gaming has appeal to people who are not traditionally video game players?
As shown in the clip, Wii is an alternative to the regular exercises taught by physios and occupational therapists post sergery. Its something the participants in this clip say is fun and exciting, allowing them to engage in sports they once played but can no longer like bowling, golf, tennis and even boxing! Its not a replacement for the usual therapy but its something extra to add on top of it for a little bit of fun therapy!

2. What is the relevance to OT?
Wii provides a great alternative to regular therapy interventions that can be meaningful and fun for clients. Wii can help improve physical abilities as well as cognitive (stated above) with the wide variety in games available like Wii sports. As Wii is something people will generally enjoy, it will motivate them to participate and engage in their therapy, working towards a speedy recovery.

Video Production: Tutorial Four and five

Youtube is another service offered and owned by google, like Blogger.com. However Youtube is predominently an online community that lets users upload and view video files from all over the world. You are able to view videos without having a youtube account but by having one you can host your own video blog, rate others videos, comment on them and subscribe to your favourite producers. Fame is also found on youtube like the New Zealand fellow, Christiaan Van Vuuren, that caught Campbell Lives attention and has his video postings shown on the program. Check this one out!

If you are interested in making your own short film it is useful to use a storyboard.
What is a storyboard? It's a series of simple drawings on paper of the ideas of shots for your film.
So we drew up the ideas for our film, nominated our actors and discussed what the aim of our film was. This was helpful in my group making the short film as we were able to get straight onto filming knowing exactly what we wanted to film and at what angle the camera was to be on - No mucking about!
Having small shots of around 10 seconds each made it easy to put the film together and also made the film more interesting as each 10 second shot was filmed on a different angle. We haven't shown peoples faces in our short film and there are no vocals - only music. This ensured confidentiality for our actors.

At first this seemed hard as how were we to portray the mood of our actors and get the story across to our audiance? However we used movement, camera angles, props and music to portray our message.

Here is our short film!

Tutorial Two: Digital Camera use and application

"A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature"
In relation to digital camera technology I would have to disagree with the statement above. With a digital camera you are able to take as many photos as your card can hold, this could be hundreds depending on the size of your card. This is no extra cost, and you can pick and chose ones to delete or print off. Unlike the old film cameras where you would have to buy a film that would hold approx 25 images and would pay to get them all developed even if the pictures were a little blurred and a finger was blocking the real image.

Another plus to digital cameras is that you can instantly upload images to your home computer to view them or even manipulate the image on such programs as Photoshop. From here you can distribute them via email, Facebook, Bebo and Flikr to friends and family in a matter of minutes.

There is debate on whether the old film cameras take better images than a digital camera, however this all comes down to the quality of your camera.

Digital images can be stored, transferred and manipulated using other communication technology. On sites such as Facebook, Bebo, Twitter and Flikr you can store images in online albums that you can access on the internet in any location around the world. Some cell phones have cameras in them where you can take a decent quality image and send it to another cell phone or computer through bluetooth which costs nothing.

Digital cameras also offer digital and optical zoom. Optical zoom works like a zoom lens on a film camera. The lens changes focal length and magnification as it is zoomed. Image quality stays high within the zoom range. Digital zoom is when the picture is simply cropped and then enlarges that cropped portion.
The mega pixels of your camera can determine the quality of the image when using the digital zoom especially. Pixels are small squares of colour that make up the image.

Along with most things, there follows ethical issues. Digital cameras can cost a lot of money especially if you are wanting one that takes a high quality image. Not everyone can keep up with the forever advancing technologies and therefore don't and can get left behind with the old technologies that slowly get taken off the market, eg VCR players.
Another ethical issue is privacy. By uploading images to internet communication sites, anyone can access these images even after you have deleted them from your album.

Occupational Therapists can use digital imaging for some assessments. For example if a house is needing modifications we can take a picture of that space and send it through to places like Enable NZ to look at for funding.
